    Default Hybrid Crappie ?

Any body know any thing about these fish. They say they are Hybrids look at the black line on the nose to the top fin.

That is a Black Nose Crappie. I have caught them on Eufaula and Talquin.

Where did you pick that one up from?

The black nose comes from a recessive gene in the black crappie. Sorta like an albino blue catfish, still a blue cat, just looks different. They only breed with the black crappie but from what I've read on them, they have a high infertility rate so they are becoming popular for stocking smaller lakes and ponds.

I talked to DNR today . It is a black crappie. Not a Hybrid. The Gene that causes the black line on the nose to the dorsal fin is only passed on to 30 % of the population that is why the are not real common.

Could you possibly provide additional information on this?

One of the major problems with stocking small farm ponds with crappie, if memory serves me correctly, is the 3 year cycle of just a few, large slabs, next year with many stunted fish and a middle year with good numbers of good fish. I may be remembering incorrectly. In my mother's 4 1/2 acre pond, we have lots of back crappie but most seem to be long, skinny fish at the present.

I thought that if a lake was smaller than 15 acres crappie should not be introduced into it. Anyone else ever hear this?
