I use AVG free version, it's works for me. I like it better than Norton.
I just reformatted my computer and could use an antivirous program. Are any of the free downloadable one any good? thanks

I'm currently using AVAST! Home Edition 4.8 ... free download, and it's auto updating. Pretty satisfied with it, and it's caught some nasties for me since I've been using it (about 4yrs).
Go here : Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com ... look on the right hand side (most popular downloads) and you'll see it in the list (#3). I also have #4 & #6 running on my system. #4 Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good one to have. #6 Ad-Aware is kind of redundant, but it's been on my computers for years and so I just keep it updated (more as a backup than a front line program).
I have used AVG (#1) and it worked fine. I had a little trouble with it, not wanting to update correctly (a few years ago) ... so I switched to Avast!. I'm sure they've fixed whatever problem was causing that.
I've never used Avira (#2), so I can't tell you anything about it ... but, I'm sure it's good, too. Best thing to do, is to click on each of the first 5 listed, and read the reviews ... then pick the one that sounds best & easiest for you to use. It's better to have one of these, than nothing

I'll give a 2nd to AVG
I use viper.com. Both in business and home. Fairly priced. It has cut down on my spam.

AVG free for years. Works.
I also use crap cleaner (CCleaner). It works better than any spyware I know of and it only takes seconds to run.
I use Microsoft firewall.
I also use Firefox.
Never had a problem.
Only info on my computer worth sniffing is my waypoints.

AVG free is very good. Updates automatically and has a scheduled scan.
Avast! Is very good. Updates automatically, but the free version only has a manual full scan, but has a real time scanner that will catch most stuff immediately.
Malwarebytes is very good but the free version does not update automatically nor does it scan at scheduled times.

I like AVG

I have used AVG by itself and still got infected. I still run AVG programmed to run daily but also added free Malewarebytes and Ad-Aware. I run the latter two about once/twice a week. All 3 finds stuff and gets rid of it before it becomes a problem.
