    Angry Ants!!

I went bank fishing at the local reservoir in town Saturday just to kill some time. I was getting alot bites not only from crappie (caught 20 or so again:D) but from fire ants. The locals that fish there say ants are a problem. Cant leave worms or a sandwich down or they'll be "spyder droiding" it. I didnt have live bait, only a jar of Gulp minners and those buggers were all over the jar. Couldnt stand on the grass and spillway concrete cause those ants would be all over my legs bitin me. I was wonderin if anybody else has this problem. I thought of sprayin bug spray around the area i fish especially that stuff with the contact residue stuff in it. Would it be a bad idea to do that if the reservior is used for drinking?

LOL...if fire ants were biting me I really wouldnt care about the water at that moment. I'd do something about keeping those buggers off me or I'd find another pond to fish in.:o

Where is Romania, South Carolina? I'd ask the local fishermen how they handle this situation. If there are no local fishermen where you are fishin', I'd move to another place without fireants! They are hard to kill, just move around when you try. EPA has taken the "good" fireant pesticides off the market, they are too dangerous!

the only other crappie places i know are either fished out, over run with white perch, or have too many green carp rockets running around. Alot of the locals go out in boats on that lake but forum member Racoon cant take his Tidewater out in it cause its electric only lake and says he doesnt have enough of the richard petty coke (goodys powder) to help his back tolerate sitting in my tin freighter. I seen crappie school and bust water like stripers

There are a number of fire ant baits on the market. Read the labels on them and look for how far from the known high water mark the bait can be used. If that info isnt on the label there may be some guidance on how far away the bait should be from the water. You can also call your extension agent about possible products and the manufacturers for guidance. Of course the label is Federal law.
Baits need time to work and it sounds like a big colony of ants.

My son had a solution to this problem when he was about 10 years old. When I lived in Texas, I had a tank (pond for those not from Texas) out back. Fire ants were terrible one year. One day when I arrived from work, he was out there standing in a wash tub full of water while he was fishing. Pretty smart I thought for a kid.

    whiskerwhipper,

Sounds like you've been having some troubles with fire ants in the past, also. Try the bug spray idea next time you're out. And its not that pops doesn't have any "Richard Petty Coke", its just that its a fact: when we go with you, we don't catch any fish!

Heres a couple things You can try. Buy a jar of peanut butter and buy some seven dust. Mix a good dose of seven in with the peanut butter. Get some drinking straws and cut them into 2 inch pieces. take some of the mix and pack into the straws. Drop the straws around the mounds.

The peanut butter will draw the ants. They carry it down to the queen for a good meal and BLAMO! The Queen is toast from the seven. The straw keeps the peanut butter good for a while by keeping rain and moisture off. Remove the queen and the rest will leave.

I have also heard that instant grits work too. They will carry the grits down to the queen. She will eat the grits and they will expand and kill her. Have not seen that one personally though. CF
