Anyone fishing Smith? I had a fair weekend with Saturday afternoon producing 35 very nice fish. Very slow during morning and quite stormy about 8:30 AM. Only had 5 @ 11o and ended day with 40. They were hitting very shallow and mostly on tube jigs. Going this Friday and try again!!
what part of smith are you fishing,Misty Harbor end or down toward the bridge or smith lake park ??
i fish smith a little . but i have a hard time finding the crappie there. its only 30 or 40 minutes from my house if i thought i could figure them out i would fish there more.
I also live very near to Smith, but get frustrated fishing there. It IS hard to find the crappie there, and seems like whatever cover gets put in is gone within a couple weeks. Also the jet ski and MASSIVE yacht traffic is unbelievable! I usually stick to the rivers.
It took me three years do do any good. This time of year is the best, like most places. They tend to hold tight in tops. Hybrid strips have hurt crappie quite a bit in my mind.
Traffic not to bad this early. However, if it warms it will get that way. It takes some time to get to know the lake well enough to do any good. Water levels change very quickly with heavy rains. Coaught 40 Saturday and went back Sunday morning and only got 7. But, thats Smith Lake. I have a place out there. I'm about 45 min north of lake.
MickeyTred is right. I believe that the stripe in the lake have killed the crappie population. Years ago you could stop at any brush top or boat dock at night and catch a limit. Now you have to run all over the place and catch 2 maybe 3 sometimes in 1 spot. When the stars are lined up perfectly you might catch 10. Those freshwater sharks are killing smith lake and I dont care what anybody says about it.![]()
If you dont mind me asking what color do you prefer on smith. I usually use blue/yellow or chartruese tube or grub. At night I use white.
