Default Alabama River Then and Now

I fish the Alabama around the Millbrook area. I don't know why the crappie catchin has dropped off so much from about five or six years ago. I'm catching two or three in about a four hour trip compared to a dozen or more. Anyone else have similar experience? If so, any theories as to why? Of course, it could be just me.

They are still there you may just be fishing the wrong way for them based on the water level, temp time of year and all that sorta thing

I have experienced the same think on all the lakes or some drop of the last few years. I still catch them good but nothing like 2010-2013. I think it's the mild winters we have had the pasted few years. Just my opinion but cool winters make for good fishing.

You may be right. I have been single-poling. Perhaps it's time to hook up my spider-rigging.

I spoke to the biologist last year. He said 2010was a awesome spawn and 2012 was good also. Crappie only live about 7 years . So just my opinion, very few numbers left. Don't get me wrong, I think there are plenty of fish left in the Bama river. Just older wiser fish. Tournament people seems to always catch a pile of fish. In 2013 every time my wife and I went we could catch 20-30. We lucky to catch 5-10 On our trips the last couple years.

I know a couple of anglers that lately still manage a one person limit on the river between cooters pond and Bear creek, but I haven't been able to do that. If I catch 5-10 I am really happy - I have not been skunked on the River this year but it has been close! The quality of the fish I catch on the river is generally always good - which keeps me going back.

The size is great compared to other lakes around for me. When we caught so many in 13 and 14 they average between 10-12 inches. Now what we catch average between 13-15 inches.

I can say my experience over the last few months supports what Johndeere5045 says. The crappie I have caught on the river have been mostly 13-15"

There could be something to that if y'all aren't catching smaller fish. I can say we have had good spawns an we have a good mix in size of fish but the last 2 years the water has got warm faster and the fish quit earlier.
