I'm fishing a tournament at Wheeler Lake this fall. I wanted to know some info about the lake. For example: What's the color of the water?, Water Temp.?, What type of structure is in the lake? and What type of crappie do you catch most of the time (black or white)?

Wheeler is like two lakes in one. On the lower end it is deep, rocky and clear to slightly stained water. On the upper end, above Decatur, it is just a river with feeder creeks. Water has more color and more current.Where it changes , just below Decatur running a boat anywhere but the main channel can be very dangerous. There are millions of stumps in the Decatur flats area that can ruin your day. Water levels are dropping now and should be winter pool by Nov., -5 ft. Water temps now are low to mid 70's. It has every kind of structure there is. I don't fish wheeler alot but I'd say its 50% or more white crappie. I'd look at big laydowns with some depth on them, on or near the river channel, also bluff banks with channel swings. On the upper end the feeder creeks are good , but they get fished alot.
