well i decided to go and fish below the G'vill dam, i know some rock piles that hold crappie and also fish the creeks below the dam, started out early and was very foggy, i put in on the south side of the dam and planed to run straight across the river then follow the bank to the dam to the rock piles, i started out from the ramp, could not see the other side of the river because of the fog so i pointed the boat toward the other bank and went less than half throttle because of the fog, kept going and going and wound up back at the ramp where i started, thinking i may have turned with out thinking i started again making double sure that i was pointed in the right direction and not turning the boat, well guess what, i ended up back at the ramp again where i had started. after that i decided to run down the bank to the creeks and fish them first. you don't know what lost until your out in the middle of the river and cannot see any landmarks, spooky feeling. fishing was nothing to brag about but was fun anyway. anyone else have something like this happen?

Before I used GPS I did have it happen between Hwy 69 in guntersville and alreds. I was going duck hunting and the fog moved in just as I started away from the ramp at the ball fields in gville. I got out away from any land marks that I could see and got lost in the clouds. Not a good feeling when barges are know to travel around that area. I finally made it to the 431 bridge and got my bearings. and then went duck hunting. Boy was i glad to see something other than fog. After GPS i did something similar but trusted the GPS even though I was thinking it was crazy. It was dead on and I did not get lost.

What a relief!! I tought I was the only dumb *** that done that before.

man glad to hear that stuff happens to other people too. getting worried it was just my luck

I have been fishing on my favorite lake for 49 years, and know it very well, but sometimes I would still get lost in dense fog. So I bought a hand held GPS - Lowrance H2O-color, downloaded some free maps ( including my lake ) off of the Lowrance web site, onto a small SD card - problem solved. A GPS unit works in the fog - perfectly. You can also buy Navonics map cards for plug and go ease

Before GPS I left my launch on Logan one morning and got out in the middle, held the steering wheel straight and was moving slowly only to find that I drove in a huge circle and ended up on my side of the river nearly a half mile doenthe river from my launch. It was scary cause I was sure I was going straight across the river. It is only about a quarter mile across where I was going. Needless to say I fished the home side bank till I could see far enought to judge my location.
