If you don't mind a response from a buckeye, I love to crappie fish this time of year. I've been doing really well in Southwest Ohio on minnows under a slip float. I fish them similar to the way a lot of guys fish with jigs. Just pitch them to cover with a long pole, going tree to tree, stump to stump in deep water or even mid depths close to deep water or channel drops. You can fish them as shallow or deep as you want by moving the bobber stop up or down. Right now the magic depth has been around 4 to 6 feet deep over 12'-20' feet of water here at East Fork, which I understand fishes a lot like Brookville in SE Indiana. I have also been casting Southern Pro hot grubs in the evenings when the shad come to the top with pretty good success. This time of year though, or anytime really, I never go on the lake without minnows.
