My first advice if you have access is to try out a fly shop and tie on as many different models of vise's as you can. A vise is like a car some like one some like another.

it's a very good article on many different vises in many different price ranges. I've tied on an old Herters vise, a sunrise brand, thompson Model A and my current vise is a Dyna-King Kingfisher, and for me I love it.
